Life’s “Values”
A Writing on Societies False Values
From a young age we are taught to want what society wants, what it think, what it believes, and what it wants us to become. This idea that we blindly follow what society wants us to is present throughout media, television, and much more.
Quote By Richard Nixon
The false values that society portrays are seen throughout our everyday lives. In the first image we see a famous quote by Richard Nixon. It says “The American people don’t believe anything until they see it on television”. This quote shows how anything that we see on the television is what we believe. We listen to the television more than we listen to eachother. This false value of how the television is important to us, has such a big impact on our daily lives. We need to realize that we should sooner believe our peers than we should the television.
One word, Nevermind. Definition? To simply ignore, not to ask questions - the very thing society wants you to do. Chasing after a false value like money is normal to do for your entire life. This is the cover art of Nirvana’s album, Nevermind, and even the title itself means so much. But that is just one word. Pictures, as they say, speak a thousand, and this one certainly does. A baby swimming after a dollar bill on a fishing hook, us chasing after the only thing we are taught to want - money. Society has burned the image of money into our minds, we are taught to want it, so we chase it. The fishing hook represents society while the money is just another false value that it wants us to believe in. Since we think that money is the answer to everything, we follow it blindly without thinking, just like the child.
Botox, just another way we try to change ourselves to be what society wants us to be. Celebrities do it so why not us? Because everyone of us is perfect in our own way. We shouldn’t want to be what society tells us to be. We should want to be ourselves. This example of botox is one of many things so many people do around the world to try and be more perfect, when in reality they become more fake than the values that society wants us to believe in. We spend our lives trying to become this idea of “perfect”, we spend our lives chasing something that has been right in front of us the entire time. Therefore, the idea of us trying to become “perfect” is just another example of how we are chasing after the false values of society
What I really took away from this post and presentation was your picture and stance towards how people will more likely listen to what's on television and believe that vs when a person says in real life. It makes me delve deeper into why that might be; whether it's because of human nature, or because we were brought up this away.
ReplyDeleteIn addition, while the quotation used by Richard Nixon might be a little outdated by a few decades, it is still very applicable to society, because of the growing amount of media platform currently used large scale. For example, if this were to have been said in 2015 vs sometime between 1969 and 1974 (because that's when he was president) it might actually say "The American People Don't Believe Anything Until They See It On The Internet", but y'know, now I'm' just rambling.
Great Presentation!
Thank you Jacob! I appreciate what you said. The reason i thought the nixon quote would work is because even though he said it in the 60's its still very true today.
DeleteWell written piece and good view of what perceived by this presentation I have acknowledged of how we must truly reflect towards our values and what is given and what is really being taken. Great work, although am left curious as to how people do such acts with their values? What makes them to be careless for their values?
ReplyDeleteOther then that good job.
