CO2 Emissions
By: Bryan Scheffelmair

Pollution is one of the major issues we face in our world. We all know it’s here and we all know what it is doing and most of us do nothing about it. Although we all want to do something to help we are all guilty of taking the easy way out. I know I would love to walk or bike more then drive but it is easier to just get in a car and go. Pollution is something that we put to the side and try and forget about, but how can we when it is right on top of us.

This first image uses contrast two show different worlds. The one on the left, a world that is healthy and peaceful. On the right is the world we live in, I’m not saying we don’t live in a nice world but it could be better. The way our world could be better is by reducing our CO2 emissions. I’m not saying we get rid of cars, that would be crazy, I’m saying we need to think about how we use cars. I think we could reduce our CO2 emissions by only using cars if you have to go somewhere far or need the car for where we are going. If you needed to get to another town or city or you need to pick something up like groceries you should use your car, but if you are going to your friends house or are going into town then why not walk? If we are more careful about when we use cars, I think we would be on the right path to becoming the world on the left.

This second image uses different colours to show different effects of gas vs electric cars. We see two faces one sad one happy. These two faces represent the two side of gas vs electric cars. As you can see the face on the right is sad, under the face it shows that he is driving a gas car. This shows the effects that CO2 emissions can have on people. This person could be upset because he realizes he is polluting the world. This could also be saying he is physically sick from the effect CO2 emissions have on his health. On the right side the person is happy and it shows he is driving an electric car. He is happy because he knows he is helping the environment.

This third picture was taken in Amsterdam where the people have been making a big difference in the pollution of CO2 emissions. The flowers in the pitcher are there to show the healthy environment that comes with reducing CO2 emissions. In Amsterdam biking takes up 38% of the means for transport. The Government is trying to discourage cars from being used as a form of transport by making steep parking fees and making a great number of streets closed off to cars in the city centre. This shows that it is possible to go without cars and not be reliable on them. If we were to do half of what Amsterdam is doing we would not only see a difference in the environment but we also see an improvement on personal health. Our personal health would be improved because we would be a lot healthier and there would be less CO2 emissions in the air making people physically ill.

In this last picture we see the world we could have, being destroyed by the world we live in now. This image uses contrast to show the difference between the two worlds.  Although this world is being destroyed it doesn’t mean we can’t save it. If we were to reduce the the pollution from cars and factories we would achieve the world we see here. If we were able to find a way to reduce pollution our health, wellbeing, and environment would like the world we see here.

  1. Hello, my dear friend Bryan. I am here today to make a disagreement, or rather, a comment on an image you used. This image in question would be the picture of the happy and sad car. You say the energy efficient man is "happy because he knows he is helping the environment". But wouldn't he also be harming the environment?
Sure, he isn't producing CO2 emissions, but let's say for example, there is a billion cars in the world. And all of a sudden we need a billion electric cars. Wouldn't we have to use materials to produce these cars? Extract them? Are all of these methods used going to be friendly to the environment? I see your point on how it is better, but what about the actual production of the car? Long term this car is better, but what about the short term? Just food for thought.

  2. Although noraA eladsaelB ywolloP has a good point, I have to disagree with him. I believe your images were a great representation of what the biggest problem in our world is. Your thesis really connects with me and your images amplify it even more. I like how you incorporate the entire world within this subject instead of just North America or Canada. Great job. Awesome possum.
