The Negative Effects of Abuse:
A Major Issue In Our Society Today
Abuse may occur only once, or may occur frequently while escalating over a period of months or years. In any form, abuse profoundly affects the individual health and well-being of a person. Abuse can be emotional and it can easily intensify as it becomes tougher to control. There are many types of abuse and they are all difficult to experience. Unfortunately, quite often abuse goes unseen, as the victim does not recognize that he/she is abusing a substance or being personally abused.

Many people do not understand why or how people become addicted to drugs. It is often assumed that drug abusers can stop using drugs simply by choosing to change their behavior. In reality, drug addiction is a complex disease, and quitting takes more than good intentions or a strong will. Drugs can affect your life in many negative ways. People who use drugs believe that it does positive things for them due to the “high” feeling that drugs give them. In this image, the position of the hand is significant because it illustrates how vulnerable drugs can make a person. The curled fingers are a cry for help. It is extremely difficult to stop abusing drugs once the brain is addicted. In addition, drug abuse plays a huge role in many major social problems. The fact that the word “HELP” is written on a note next to the drugs is proving how abusers have a hard time finding help because the drugs have destroyed their ability to reach out to people. At least half of those who become addicted have depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, or another mental problem. A stressful or chaotic lifestyle and low self-esteem are also a huge problem associated with drug abuse, which can be destructive to a person’s life.

There are words that are obvious and, without question abusive. The young girl crying in this image demonstrates how verbal abuse can hurt people just as much as a physical punch to the face. Abusers like to think that they are dominant over others. This showing how abuse gives the abuser a feeling of power. The person who created this image is portraying the idea of how abuse leads to feelings of sadness and anger. It also gives people a visual of verbal abuse and how it actually hurts people. Verbal abuse can trigger physical aggression, delinquency, and social problems. The more verbally severe the abuse is, the more pronounced the problem. Furthermore, any form of verbal abuse can have an immense effect on an individual, whether its temporary or for the rest of their life.

Sexual abuse, also referred to as molestation, is forcing undesired sexual relation by one person upon another. Abuse covers many things, but in general, it means doing things that the other person doesn't want done to them. Or, in the case of sexual abuse, having relations with someone who is too vulnerable to make a decision about what they want to do.The facial expression and overall composition in this image illustrate how scary and damaging sexual abuse can be. The effects of sexual abuse can be damaging to the mind and body of a person. It can affect how one interacts with people and views themselves for the rest of their life. Also in this image, there is tape covering the girls mouth with the phrase “if you tell anyone”. This is a threat which is often involved with sexual abuse. The abuser will often threaten the victim into believing something bad will happen if they tell someone. This can cause emotional problems and extreme trust issues. Overall, it is obvious the effect sexual abuse has on an individual. It is a huge problem in our society today and it can ruin the lives and mental health of many people.
In conclusion, Abuse can not go unseen any longer. All forms of abuse have an overall negative effect on the well being of a person and hopefully people will be able to say no to alcohol or drugs at certain times and realizing whats more important. Also verbal and sexual abuse is something that needs to be stopped. It can really damage a person’s life if one of these two things happen to them and they will never forget.
Travis, your overall message was portrayed through these four images very well. The first image was significant because it portrays the image that the man is trapped into the addiction, and as you said in your presentation some people may not know they are addicted therefor unable to get the proper help they need. Well done Travis.
